Ms. Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation of Thailand, led a delegation of MHESI executives and young researchers to attend the opening ceremony of the Science and Technology in Society forum 2023 (STS forum 2023) on 1 October 2023 at the Kyoto International Conference Center (ICC Kyoto), Kyoto Japan. The ceremony was presided over by Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister of Japan, who delivered a keynote address titled “World in 2023: What Do We Need from S&T?”
Following the opening ceremony of STS forum 2023 on 1 October 2023, Minister Supamas also participated in the S&T Ministers’ Roundtable alongside leaders and representatives from various countries. At the Roundtable, she articulated Thailand’s key vision for advancing science and technology policy to promote sustainability under the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy Model. She emphasized the importance of fostering environmentally friendly products and innovation-driven growth. This approach reflects Thailand’s commitment to leveraging science and technology to address global challenges while strengthening international cooperation for sustainable development.
During the opening ceremony of STS forum 2023, Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister of Japan, delivered a keynote address titled “World in 2023: What Do We Need from S&T?” In his remarks, he highlighted both the impact and transformative potential of science and technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI). He addressed critical issues such as the spread of misinformation, the protection of intellectual property rights, and the need to build public trust in AI systems. He also underscored the global challenge of climate change and emphasized the importance of advancing technology and innovation on the foundation of peace, stability, and international cooperation.
Hiroshi Komiyama, Chairman of the Science and Technology in Society forum, delivered a keynote address emphasizing that societies and humanity must remain vigilant and adaptive in response to transformative changes driven by emerging technologies. He highlighted technological evolution for economic advancement and the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), while cautioning that careful consideration must be given to its potential impacts across multiple dimensions.
Dr. Wiparat De-Ong, Executive Director of the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), stated that NRCT is a member of the STS forum and a principal supporter of STS forum 2023. This role provides valuable and continuous opportunities for Thai institutions and researchers to participate in forum activities and present their research on prominent regional and international platforms. She further noted that each year NRCT opens applications for young researchers to be selected for participation in the Young Leaders Program, reinforcing Thailand’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of global scientific leaders.
