NRCT Strengthens Science and Technology Cooperation through the STS forum Council Meeting in Brussels, Belgium
On 4 June 2026, the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), participated in the STS forum Council Meeting. Dr. Wiparat De-Ong, Executive Director of the NRCT, attended the meeting as a Council Member of the STS forum, together with senior executives from science and technology organizations around the world. The meeting was held at the Info Hub, European Parliament, Brussels, Belgium.
On this occasion, Professor Hiroshi Komiyama, Chairman of the STS forum, and Professor Dr. Lina Gálvez Muñoz, Member of the European Parliament (MEP), delivered welcoming remarks to the participants.
The meeting brought together STS forum Council Members, including leaders of research organizations, science, technology and innovation policy agencies, and distinguished experts from various countries, to discuss strategic directions and key themes for the STS forum Annual Meeting 2026, which will be held in Kyoto, Japan. Discussions focused on identifying priority issues in science, technology and society to address emerging global challenges. Participants reviewed the structure and agenda of the STS forum Annual Meeting 2026 under the theme “Navigating Tectonic Shifts in Science, Technology, and Society,” covering topics such as sustainable energy, global commons, advanced biomedical technologies, human capital development and education, international cooperation in science and technology, and digital technologies.
During the meeting, Dr. Wiparat highlighted the important role of the STS forum in strengthening international cooperation in science, technology and innovation. She emphasized the need for interdisciplinary approaches and international collaboration to address increasingly complex global challenges in the economic, social, environmental, and technological spheres. Particular attention was given to the rapid transformation driven by digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI), as well as the importance of providing greater opportunities for early-career researchers to contribute to shaping the future of global science and innovation.
Dr. Wiparat also presented the successful outcomes of the STS forum Japan–Thailand Symposium 2026, jointly organized by the NRCT and the STS forum on 24–25 April 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand. The symposium served as an effective platform for knowledge exchange and networking among researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders in science, technology and innovation from Thailand, Japan, and other countries. The event further reinforced Thailand’s role as an important partner of the STS forum and a key contributor to the international scientific community.
The NRCT’s participation in the STS forum Council Meeting reflects its proactive role in advancing Thailand’s science, research and innovation cooperation on the global stage. It also demonstrates Thailand’s commitment to contributing to international discussions on the future direction of science, technology and innovation, with the aim of fostering sustainable development and enhancing the country’s global competitiveness.
