Hub of Knowledge for Low Carbon Materials
The Low-Carbon Materials Knowledge Center serves as a collaborative hub between researchers, experts, and domestic and international organizations dedicated to promoting the utilization of research and innovation in low-carbon agricultural materials. Its aim is to increase value and reduce the carbon footprint by collecting, systematizing, and developing a database for research advancement and commercialization. This is accomplished in collaboration with networks of farmers, researchers, businesses, and relevant agencies. Data is collected for traceability throughout the supply chain to support the production and use of environmentally friendly materials. The center also acts as a link between knowledge and practical application through knowledge dissemination, skill development, academic conferences, and policy consultations, driving the systematic use of low-carbon materials throughout the value chain.
Our goal is to transform earthquake knowledge into action, strengthening public safety and enhancing Thailand's long-term resilience.
Center of Excellence on Catalysis and Catalytic Reaction Engineering - CECC
The national policy to promote electric vehicles is leading to an oversupply of ethanol and biodiesel. Whilst the national goal of achieving zero carbon emissions urges the oil and petrochemical industry to seek alternative carbon sources other than natural gas and oil. These bring the need of the country to put efforts to change biodiesel and ethanol into a product or reactant for the oil and petrochemical industry. Therefore, the "Catalysis Engineering Hub of Knowledge for Competitive and Sustainable Biorefinery Industry" project is seen as an essential project of our country. Also, It aligns perfectly with Strategy 3 of Thailand's Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy Model, which emphasizes upgrading and developing Thai BCG industries to enhance sustainable competitiveness by employing science, technology, and innovation while placing importance on eco-friendly manufacturing systems. It is consistent with the 27th Conference of the Parties under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (UNFCCC COP27) held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, during 6-18 November 2022.
The Hub is equipped with capable human resources as shown by the highest number of research publications among ASEAN countries. Furthermore, the established agricultural, and oil and petrochemical industry infrastructures in Thailand are significant in size enough to support the research in these areas of the Catalysis Engineering Hub of Knowledge for Competitive and Sustainable Biorefinery Industry.
One of the unique characteristics of this project is close collaborations among the researchers from both government and private sectors on basic and applied research, respectively. Under an in-depth research, the Hub aims to discover suitable catalysts for converting ethanol, biodiesel or other biomass resources into products or precursors usable by the oil and petrochemical industry.
The project also includes the following supporting activities:
- Knowledge transfer and advisory services for the researchers in the agricultural, and oil and petrochemical industries;
- Seeking collaborations with leading researchers at foreign universities;
- Facilitating researcher and research assistant exchanges with leading researchers at foreign universities for knowledge transfer;
- Networking with researchers in ASEAN countries; and
- Introducing and maintaining the project website.
Mekong River Basin Biodiversity Conservation Utilization Network
The abundance of Thailand's biodiversity resources and related intellectual assets is a national treasure of immense value. It is of paramount importance in economic, social, and environmental aspects; arguably, it is the only remaining crucial asset that can ensure Thailand's survival in the face of the various crises it is currently experiencing. However, developing the country based on biodiversity resources cannot be done effectively due to a lack of fundamental knowledge, both modern and traditional, and a shortage of specialized personnel. This leads to the instability of the resource base. Furthermore, current changes in the economy, society, science and technology, and natural resources and the environment present both opportunities and threats. Therefore, Thailand needs an integrated and systematic management of biodiversity resources and knowledge, encompassing both the creation and development of knowledge and the application of appropriate technologies, integrated with the strengths of Thai society. The Center of Excellence on Biodiversity was thus established by a Cabinet resolution on August 1, 2006, as one of 11 centers of excellence under the Office of the Science and Technology Excellence Development Project and the Science Promotion and Coordination Division. The Research and Innovation Division (RID) under the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (OSHE), aims to be a key mechanism for strengthening the security of natural resources and the environment, creating innovation and added value for Thailand's economic and social systems, and building a foundation for national education and research to become a leader and a center for higher education in Southeast Asia in the field of biodiversity.
