TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for the advancement of science in developing countries) is formerly Third World Academy of Sciences, an independent organization. TWAS was established in 1983 under the collaboration of leading scientists from developing countries. The objective of the organization is to strengthen the political and scientific leadership base on sciences and technologies. Under a 1991 agreement, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) assumed responsibility for administering TWAS funds and personnel. The head office of TWAS is located in Trieste, Italy.
TWAS Prize for Young Scientists
In the year 1986, TWAS has initiated the awarding project for young scientists in order to develop human capacity of developing countries in the fields of science by inviting TWAS’s members to recruit young scientists with outstanding performance every year rotated from 4 disciplines (biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics). The prize consists of the plaque and 2,000 USD to support young scientists on their work for further progress. There are currently 43 countries participating in this project. For Developing countries in Southeast Asia, Philippines and Vietnam participate in this project as well.
Participation of Thailand in the project
National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) has participated in this project of TWAS from 1997 until present for promoting Thai scientists with outstanding performance contributing to the society of Thailand. Every year, NRCT creates a working group consists of academic experts in the related fields to proceed the working process of TWAS Prize awarding. From 1997 until 2014, there are 17 scientists from Thailand awarded by this project.
