          R programing language is a computer language designed for statistical analysis and data visualization. R is open-source software and freely distributed to public. In addition, R allows users to develop commands and programs to use on their particular work. The users may also publish and share their commands and programs to the public repository. Consequently, R is capable of doing various tasks from basic mathematical calculations to complex statistical analyses. R is compatible with many operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. R can also be used with other programing languages such as C, Python and Java. Furthermore, R can directly connect to many popular databases including MySQL and PostgreSQL. For data visualization, R can diversely present data. It could create simple plots and graphs like scatter plot, bar graph and line graph. With addition packages installed, R can generate geographical maps, heat maps, animations and even interactive web applications. With all aforementioned properties, R users are rapidly rising around the world. In addition, the need to analyze ‘big data’ has interested many data analysts to start using R as their ‘big data’ tools.

          This workshop will be a continuation of the international workshop on “R Programing Language for Data analysis and Statistical Application (R2015)” held in November 2015. At the end of R2015 workshop, participants suggested several interesting topics to be included in the following R programing workshop. In addition, the speaker team was unable to cover advanced statistical analyses and applications within the limited time of R2015 workshop.

      Therefore, Division of Bioinformatics and Data Management for Research, Office for Research and Development, Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital and Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, National University of Singapore are hosting an international workshop on “Advanced R Programing Language for Data analysis and Statistical Application (R2017)” to help users learn how to use R programing language for advanced statistical analyses and applications. Participants will learn how to use commands in R and understand advanced concepts in statistics. Finally, participants will acquire advanced knowledge to apply to their own applications.
